BIE, 5/2017, p. 183-187, U. Jacobi: "US patent law was drastically amended by the Leahy-Smith American Invents Act (AIA), which was signed into law in September 2014 and March 2103. The most important change that the AIA brought is that the US abandoned a "first-to-invent" system for a "first-inventor-to-file" system, which is more in line with the "first-to-file" system of most patent laws, including the European. The US was the last country to abandon the "first-to-invent" system. The change was introduced to "promote greater international uniformity and certainty in the procedures used for securing the exlcusive rights of inventors" and to limit counterproductive litigation costs."
