Mediaforum 2016-5/6. p. 132-144, Richard Eccles: "In June 2016, the result of the UK referendum of EU membership sent shockwaves through UK business communities and UK and also international financial markets. Since then, the UK has found itself in an ambiguous position. It is still a member state of the EU but without a future within the EU. Companies in the telecommunications, broadband and media sectors have been concerned to know what the implications are for the future regulation of the sectors. Overall, we cannot predict, at this stage, the nature or content of the UK’s future relationship with the EU, nor the extent or direction of any change in UK legislation in the area, or the approach that the national regulator Ofcom will take when EU requirements are lifted.

However it is possible already to point out some definite implications of a ‘Brexit’ in terms of the extent to which EU law and regulation will or will not apply in the UK, and to indicate some areas in which regulatory approaches and positions in the UK may diverge following a Brexit. This article will explain the UK’s overall position, the implications for the telecommunications and broadband sectors and certain changes that are possible in the telecommunications and electronic media sectors.Increasingly, operators based in the EU will need to adapt to different regulatory approaches in the UK in these
sectors."
