Extraterrestrial copyright violations. Aliens have been unwittingly pirating the human race's music since the late 70s, and thanks to our primitive copyright system, they now owe us more money than exists in the universe. Needless to say, they are pretty fucking pissed. That's the setup for Reid's new book, Year Zero — a kind of farcical, Douglas Adams-style re-imagining of The Day The Earth Stood Still, with humanity's fast-expanding arsenal of labyrinthine copyright laws standing in for Cold War era A-bombs. Opgepast voor nep-kettingzagen. Nederlandse oplichters lopen het land af met namaakkettingzagen. Die dragen ronkende merknamen als Husqvarna, De Walt, Honda, Metabo of Stihl. Beroep tegen verbod tv-gids. De Telegraaf gaat in hoger beroep tegen het verbod op een eigen tv-gids. Medio juni bepaalde de Amsterdamse voorzieningenrechter in een kort geding dat was aangespannen door de omroepen dat deze krant moest stoppen met de gids. Volgens de rechter vallen de programmagegevens nu nog onder de bescherming van de Mediawet. De kans is echter groot dat de Mediawet op dit gebied wordt gewijzigd Lees hier meer (Telegraaf).

West-Europese (IE) advocatenkantoren populair in Amerika. (…) Het meest gevraagde rechtsgebied waarvoor buitenlandse kantoren worden ingeschakeld is Intellectuele Eigendom. 40% maakt gebruik van buitenlandse kantoren voor ten minste een vijfde van het IE-werk. Aan litigation en arbeidsrecht wordt ook een aardig deel van het budget gespendeerd: ongeveer een derde gebruikt buitenlandse kantoren voor ten minste een vijfde van dat werk. ACTA's Back: European Commission trying to sneak in worst parts using Canada-EU trade agreement as a Trojan horse.  Even in the face of a resounding rejection of ACTA by the European Parliament last week, the European Commission seems determined to keep pushing for its eventual adoption. Techdirt noted some ways in which it might try to do that, but an important article by Michael Geist lays out what seems to be an alternative approach that is already close to fruition. Britse rechter: 'Galaxy Tab niet zo cool als iPad'. Samsung heeft in het Verenigd Koninkrijk een veldslag gewonnen in de juridische strijd met concurrent Apple. De Britse rechter zegt in zijn uitspraak dat de Galaxy Tab van Samsung 'niet cool genoeg is' om verward te worden met de iPad. Lees hier meer (Standaard).

Olympische Inhakers in kaart gebracht. Na de EK-inhakers brengt Activate&Co vanaf vandaag in kaart welke Olympische campagnes er lopen in Nederland. Vanaf de Olympische Spelen in London worden nu ook inhakers rond de Olympische Spelen gevolgd. Patent war talks to be hosted by UN agency to protect innovation. A rash of patent lawsuits has prompted the UN to call smartphone makers and others mobile industry bodies together. It said the parties needed to address the "innovation-stifling use of intellectual property" which had led to several devices being banned from sale. Lees hier meer (BBC).

Post-ACTA: declassified negotiation documents on criminal provisions. (…) Right on the next day, the Council of the European Union has declassfied the different (and still secret) negotiation versions of the ACTA criminal sanctions chapter (these fall under Council competence, whereas the Commission was in charge of the general trade provisions). Zeven Duitsers veroordeeld voor verkopen gratis software-abonnementen. In Duitsland zijn zeven mensen veroordeeld voor het aanbieden van betaalde abonnementen voor gebruik van software die gratis verstrekt wordt, waaronder Firefox.
