Pirate Party Enters Berlin Parliament After Historical Election Win. For the first time in history a Pirate Party has managed to enter a state parliament. The German Pirate Party has scored a massive win in the elections for the Berlin state parliament today. Two hours after the voting booths closed the first results show the Pirates achieving 9 percent of the counted votes. This translates into 15 parliament seats. Lees hier meer.

President Obama Signs America Invents Act, Overhauling the Patent System. Today, at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, President Obama signed the America Invents Act, historic patent reform legislation.“I am pleased to sign the America Invents Act.  This much-needed reform will speed up the patent process so that innovators and entrepreneurs can turn a new invention into a business as quickly as possible,” said President Obama. “I’m also announcing even more steps today that will help bring these inventions to market faster and create jobs. European Commisioners urge for the digitisation of Europe's heritage. Making Europe's cultural heritage more accessible on-line and ensuring copyright rules are respected was among the issues addressed when Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Michel Barnier, Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, joined Ministers for Culture and Audiovisual Policy at their informal meeting in Wroclaw, Poland, on 9 September.Commissioner Barnier highlighted the need for an appropriate copyright framework for the digital era, and in this context encouraged all stakeholders to respond to the recently launched Green Paper on online distribution of audiovisual works. Jeremy Hunt wants net firms to do more to prevent access to pirate sitesUK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has delivered a hard-hitting speech, calling on net firms, advertisers and credit card companies to cut ties with websites that link to unlawful content. In a speech to the Royal Television Society, he said he wanted to make it harder for such sites to prosper. Ideally the government would like to see Google remove pirate sites from its search engine completely. But Google's response suggested this was unlikely. "Without a court order, any copyright owner can already use our removals process to inform us of copyright infringing content and have it removed from Google Search," the firm said in a statement. Onderzoek EC naar machtsmisbruik Google met zoekmachine en AdWords. In een speech stelt commissaris van Mededinging Joaquín Almunia Google echter voor als 'dominante browser'. Dit onderzoek gaat over mogelijk machtsmisbruik van Google door zijn dominante positie in de zoekmachinemarkt en de gerelateerde reclamediensten zoals AdWords.
