Future of Copyright bericht: “On 1 February, Google and the French president François Hollande signed an agreement after two months of mediation with French news sites. The agreement provides that Google will deposit €60 million into the newly created Digital Publishing Innovation Fund to support publishers with the transformation to digital publishing. Besides, Google will help French news publishers to increase their online advertising revenue by allowing them to profit from Google advertising platforms, including AdSense and AdMob.
This agreement resolves an ongoing conflict between Google and the French news publishers. Publishers from France, Germany and Italy claimed that they lost money and readers because snippets of news content appeared in Google's search results. In October 2012, president Hollande came up with a plan for a new tax that would make Google and other search engines pay for each time they used content from French media. In return, Google threatened to block French websites from its search results. Under the signed agreement, snippets in Googles search results will remain free and French media will continue to appear in the search results.”
