B9 9664. Oud-profschaatser Erben Wennemars is er niet van gediend dat het lingeriemerk Sapph zijn naam heeft gebruikt. (…) Sapph-directeur Rob liet aan de media met een knipoog weten dat de oud-schaatser een nieuwe weg was ingeslagen als fotograaf en stuurde foto's en een video naar verschillende media waarop te zien is hoe Erben de modellen fotografeert. En dat wil Erben niet hebben. Hij heeft daarom een mail gestuurd naar Sapph waarin hij schrijft dat dat zijn privacy en portretrecht geschonden zijn en dat associcatie tussen hem en het merk niet is toegestaan.(…)  De eigenaar van Sapph vindt het onzin dat Erben "op hoge poten" een e-mail heeft gestuurd en vervolgt: "Laat hem maar komen met zijn advocaat. EU Judges’ network discusses IP crime. Around 50 judges, public prosecutors and legal experts from the European Commission, Eurojust and enforcement organisations such as Interpol, gathered in Alicante on 12-13 May to discuss criminal aspects related to the infringement of Community trade mark rights. Italian public prosecutor Sabina Noce, from the Court of Turin, said it was an important event bringing different ideas to bear on how to tackle this increasingly difficult problem. Lees hier meer.

Nieuw keurmerk voor meldpunten. Hoewel het nieuwe Keurmerk voor Meldpunten positief ontvangen is door critici en consumenten is één partij uiterst sceptisch: het Meldpunt voor Keurmerken. “Nederland is keurmerkmoe”, aldus Frederik van Dussen, woordvoerder van het meldpunt. “Keurmerken voor milieu, biologisch voedsel, duurzaamheid, we krijgen wekelijks drie meldingen van nieuwe keurmerken. Reken daar nog vier meldingen bij van onze nieuwe keurmerkenkliklijn, die op zijn beurt ook weer gekeurd moet worden.”Gerbrand Corstius herkent zich niet in de kritiek van het Meldpunt voor Keurmerken. “Het meldpunt verenigt twee basisbehoeften van de Nederlander: melden en keuren. Eigenlijk zouden we dat altijd moeten kunnen, met alles op alle tijden.” Lees hier meer.

EU & US demand ICANN reforms. On Thursday, E.U. Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes and Larry Strickling, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, said they will continue to support the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) system for assigning top level domains. The U.S. and the European Union have agreed to work together to ensure that domain naming on the Internet remains in the hands of independent private-sector stakeholders, but have demanded reforms. Google 'close to $500m settlement' over illegal drug ads. Google has set aside $500 million not for an antitrust settlement, but to settle a US criminal investigation into claims that it made hundreds of millions of dollars from ads purchased by illegal online pharmacies, according to a report citing people familiar with the matter. The European Commission will shortly present a proposal for a European intellectual property rights strategy. The Commission will also propose a new customs regulation. The International Chamber of Commerce estimated that 2.5 million people living in G20 countries lost their jobs in 2009 due to IPR infringements. Counterfeit and piracy also damage cultural diversity and national budgets due to missed tax revenues. (…) There are four times as many music downloads in the US as in the EU because of the lack of legal offers and fragmented markets. In order to set the right incentives for creation and investment, innovative business models and dissemination of works, the Commission will outline ways that would allow for the management of copyright in the most efficient way.
