The World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the World Trade Organization will launch a new study on 5 February 2013 on the linked roles that public health policies, intellectual property and trade can play in advancing medical technology and ensuring it is available equitably to all who need it.

The study, “Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation: Intersections between Public Health, Intellectual Property and Trade”, aims to assist policy-makers by providing an overview of the interplay between public health, trade and intellectual property, information on legal and policy options, and empirical data.

It illustrates the need to adopt a holistic approach, ranging from research and discovery to delivery, encompassing the health, trade and intellectual property dimensions. It is another milestone in the close cooperation between WHO, WIPO and WTO.

The study is intended to inform ongoing technical co-operation activities undertaken by the three organizations, and to support policy discussions. Based on many years of field experience in technical cooperation, the study has been prepared to serve the needs of policy-makers who seek a comprehensive presentation of the full range of issues, as well as lawmakers, government officials, delegates to international organizations, non-governmental organizations and researchers."
